LUANG PRABANG - PAK OU - VIENG THONG - VIENG XAY - MUONG KHAM - PLAN OF JARS - XAISOMBOUNE - VANG VIENG - LUANG PRABANG/VIENTIANE

Explore one of the wildest areas in Indochina, as we ride through many dense, beautiful rainforests. 'Rock and Roll' takes on a new meaning with the demanding terrain, but the adventure continues off the bike as well. While cooling your boots, there will be plenty of opportunities to visit with and learn about the different ethnic minority cultures you'll encounter.

Visit the World Heritage site of Luang Prabang. Discover Vieng Xay, the former Pathet Lao Revolutionary head-quarters in the famous limestone cliffs. These jagged formations are riddled with caves and the history of the Phathet Lao during the second Indochina War. We will also visit the enigmatic Plain of Jars in Xieng Khoang Province. Saisomboune Special Zone…

Riding more than 1,200 km, and about 28 h on the bike.

Day 1: Luang Prabang Arrival.

After checking in to the Hotel, we will have time to relax and recharge after your long journey/flight. We will visit the many Wats and other cultural sites in Luong Prabang - The World Heritage Site - and then spend some time getting used to our bikes and preparing them for the morning's start. Dinner follows.

Option: Ride out to visit the most famous water-falls Kuangsi, with visits to villages of H'Mong, Lao Loum, Khmu Ethnic minority along the way.

Day 2: Luang Prabang - Pak Ou cave - Pak Xaeng - Vieng Thong: ~260 km ~6 h.

After the breakfast we ride up along the Mekong River to visit Pak Ou village. There we will visit Tham Ting and Tham Phoum caves, famous for their thousands of Buddha statues. Then we continue the ride, off-roading along the River Nam Xuang, and stopping for the traditional Laos food in Pak Xeng village. The road gets more interesting when we hit the 58 km from Pak Xeng to Sam Soun village: a small and steep dirt road leading through beautiful rainforest. We will then arrive at Vieng Thong and leave our bikes in the Guesthouse and make our way for a 15-minute walk to the hot spring for a shower to wash out the dirt from the trail and a welcome and relaxing soak.

Day 3: Vieng Thong - Vieng Xay: ~180 km, ~4 h.

After about 1h30 riding on rocky roads on way to Phoulao, we will come to a winding road alongside beautiful green forest. After visiting Suan Hin Stone Garden we will have a late lunch in Xam Nua of traditional Lao food in a local restaurant.

After the lunch we continue for another 30 km to Vieng Xay, the former Pathet Lao Revolutionary head-quarters with its famous hundred limestone cliffs, caves and Phathet Lao stories from the second Indochina War.

Day 4: Vieng Xay - Muong Kham: ~270 km, ~5 h.

The day is spent on a beautiful road and ride with time spent visiting some local hill-tribe villages along route No 6. We will lunch in a restaurant in Nam Neun village before heading on another 95 km dirt road to Muong Kham. On the way we can stop to visit Tham Piew cave - where about 400 people were killed during the second Indochina War by a rocket from American Jet on 24 Nov 1968.

Day 5: Muong Kham - Plain of Jars - Xaisomboune: ~190 km, ~5 h.

After breakfast we will visit Plain of Jars site 1, then continue to visit sites 2 and 3. After this, we will travel around to explore the land of lethal weapons - remnants left from the second Indochina War - including Muong Khoune, the old capital of Xieng Khoang province that was heavy bombed by American Air-Forces. Then we begin our real "rock and roll" to explore the Saisomboune Special Zone which passes through jungles and limestone karsts. We will also take a few breaks to visit Tha Vang, Nam Pheung villages. Before arriving to Saisomboune, we will take in the beautiful panorama of Phou Bia, the highest mountain in Laos - 2,819m above sea level.

Day 6: Saisomboune - Vang Vieng: ~100 km, ~4 h.

We resume our riding on the dirt, heading to the west through picturesque landscapes of jungles and rainforests in direction of Vang Vieng. We will take a break there, in the middle of a beautiful nowhere, where not a trace of traffic can be seen. After lunch we will tour Vang Vieng on the bike, and then on to small dirt tracks which close in on Nam Ngum Lake, where we will enjoy an unforgettable sunset.

Day 7: Vang Vieng - Vientiane / Luang Prabang: ~220 km ~4 h / ~200 km ~5 h.

Option 1

Today we will head south by following the dirt road along Mekong River with marks the natural border of Laos and Thailand. Along the way, we can observe the lives of local fishing trade - on both the Lao and Thai sides of the border. We can expect to arrive in Vientiane by late afternoon, the final destination of our trip.

Option 2

We spend the morning to discover the areas with many caves, and rafting or tubing… After lunch heading up north to Luang Prabang the scenery becomes more spectacular with every passing kilometer, with lots of craggy mountain peaks and some of the highest limestone formations in Southeast Asia. It's a remote and desolate landscape tailor-made for rebels. We will also be able to view Phu Phra peak, considered holy to animist hill tribes and Buddhists alike. Then we head back to Luang Prabang for the sunset and the end of our trip.

NOTE: For the Opt1 by choosing of ending the trip in Vientiane so you will have to pay extra for the bikes return to Luang Prabang by truck.
