NORTHERN LAOS
14 days / 13 nights.
Day 1: Vientiane - Vang Vieng - Phu Khoun. ~270 km, ~6 h.
Our trip begins on easy highway to Vang Vieng where we have lunch in a local restaurant on the Nam Ngum Lake. After lunch we continue our ride along the mountain road through beautiful landscape.
Highlight: Easy start through a, beautiful landscape.
Day 2: Phu Khoun - Xayabouy. ~230 km, ~5 h.
Great riding up and down 100 km of Phu Khun mountain passes visiting villages of Thai Dam, Thai Nuea, H'Mong… then turn left on to the rocky road lead us to Mekong river then we will take the ferry to the other side pf the river - Xayabouy province, one of the wildest area of Laos.
Highlight: Beautiful mountain scenery. Mountain hill tribe villages. Ferry to cross Mekong river.
Day 3: Xayabouy - Muang Ngeun. ~135 km, ~4 - 6 h.
It is 135 km from Xayaboury to Muong Ngeun and take maximum 2 hours on the high way of Laos. Nevertheless, here we are in one of the wildest area and the poorest road condition of the country so; try your best until you cannot. Praying to God for good weather instead of 7-10 hours on the road, we wish to done it during 5 hours.
You will be lucky to find out that you are the only foreigners missing in this area with beautiful green color of nature forest. You will discover many different cultures of local such as Yellow Banana tribe, many peaces of wild lives. This is the largest number of wild elephants in South East Asia.
Highlight: Great fun for riding mud, dir. Mahmuds and elephants, wild lives.
Day 4: Muang Ngeun - Huay Xai. ~95 km ~3 h.
To day, we will enjoy more dirty and muddy road, cross streams meet local people and then we will take a speed boat for another 3 hours on Mekong river which marks the border of Laos and Thailand. we will arrive to Huay Xai a beautiful small village at the crossing border with Thailand in the afternoon.
Highlight: Crossing streams on the by, speed boat to visit Mekong river.
Day 5: Huay Xai - Xieng Kok. Boating ~ 4 h.
There are two options to day; first, we could follow dirty road heading to Muong Mom the village near the point where the borders of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar meet to take a speed boat for two hours. Other option is taking the speedboat right from Huay Xai for 4 hours though the three countries of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar meet. Our boat land in to Xieng Kok then we have time to make a short trek to villages of Akha villages.
Highlight: Golden Triangle and…its infamous stories.
Day 6: Xieng Kok - Muong Sing. ~70 km, ~3 h.
Short distance of riding to day but more interesting points to see along the road and special with some forest walks around Muong Long, Nam Long and the border area with Myanmar. Visit many villages of Akha, Mien, H'Mong, Lu, Thai Dam, Thai Neua, Lo Lo, Yunanesse…
The road to day is also one of the most difficult parts of our trip but it is one of the most interesting riding parts in Laos.
Highlight: Golden Triangle and… Akha, and the area hill tribes.
Day 7: Muong Sing - Udomxai. ~180 km, ~6 h.
We have more time to explore the surrounding areas of Muong Sing to ethnic hill tribes then heading along the Nam Ou river. The road gets better when closing to Luang Nam Tha, will have lunch in the Boat landing restaurant before riding to Udomxai town, the center town of Udomxai province.
Highlight: Visit hill tribe villages, beautiful riding.
Day 8: Udomxai - Vieng Kham. ~150 km, ~5 h.
On the south direction by the good road then turn left to head eastern on the rocky road with beautiful scenery and picturesque of mountains and villages.
Highlight: Wild riding with beautiful mountain views.
Day 9: Vieng Kham - Nam Neun. ~180 km, ~6 h.
The morning early walk in the beautiful village of Muong Kham then continue "rock and roll" to Vieng Thong passing many beautiful villages of H'Mong, Thai Dam Lu, visiting our friends in villages and lunch in local restaurant in Vieng Thong. The more interesting and more rocky begin after lunch for about 2 and half hours on 65 km rocky road till Nam Nuen. We will spend the night in a small guesthouse near by a poor village Nam Neun but there you will meet many friendly people.
Highlight: Good fun for riding in the rocky road, visit local villages on the road side.
Day 10: Nam Neun - Xam Nua - Vieng Xay. ~120 km, ~4 h.
We will come to a winding road alongside beautiful green forest. After visiting Suan Hin Stone Garden we will have a late lunch in Xam Nua of traditional Lao food in a local restaurant.
After the lunch we continue for another 30 km to Vieng Xay, the former Pathet Lao Revolutionary head-quarters with its famous hundred limestone cliffs, caves and Phathet Lao stories from the second Indochina War.
Highlight: Visit Suan Hin Stone Garden and Vieng Xay, the head-quarters of Pathet Lao Revolutionary and histories of the Second Indochina War.
Day 11: Xam Nua - Phonsavan. ~230 km, ~7 h.
The day is spent on a beautiful road and ride with time spent visiting some local hill-tribe villages along route no 6. We will lunch in a restaurant in Nam Neun village before heading on another 95 km dirt road to Muong Kham. On the way we can stop to visit Tham Piew cave - where about 400 people were killed during the second Indochina War by a rocket from American Jet on 24 Nov 1968.
Then continue another hour to Phonsavan the new capital of Xieng Khoang province.
Highlight: Hill tribe villages, Tham Piew caves and the War histories.
Day 12: Phonsavan - Luang Prabang. ~230 km, ~6 h.
In the morning we will visit the Plain of Jars then follow the good road to Luang Prabang.
Highlight: Plain of Jars and its histories during the Second Indochina War.
Day 13: Luang Prabang. Walking.
Full day relax to wash out our dirt from our trip and then we discover the World Heritage Luang Prabang with many Wats and other cultural sites.
Highlight: Laos histories and cultures.
Day 14: Luang Prabang - Vientiane. ~420 km, ~8 h.
Our last day ending by ~8 hours riding on the high way back to Vientiane passing by Vang Vieng.
Highlight: End trip.
