Day 1: Vientiane - Vang Vieng. ~220 km, ~5 h.
Today we head south by following the dirt road along the Mekong River, which marks the natural border of Laos and Thailand. Along the way, we can observe the lives of the local fishing trade - on both the Lao and Thai sides of the border.
Explore beautiful Vang Vieng by tubing and rafting in the afternoon.
Highlight: Fishing villages, tubing and rafting.
Day 2: Vang Vieng - Xaisomboune. 105 km, 4 h.
Explore beautiful Vang Vieng by tubing and rafting in the morning. Then follow the dirt road heading south to the Saisomboune Special Zone, dirty and slippery. A picnic lunch will be served on the road.
Highlight: Great fun riding on dirt road.
Day 3: Xaisomboune - Phonsavan. ~140 km, ~5 h.
Begin to really "rock and roll" when we explore the Saisomboune Special Zone, passing through jungle and limestone karsts. We will also take a few breaks to visit Tha Vang, Nam Pheung villages and to enjoy the beautiful panorama of Phou Bia, the highest mountain in Laos - 2,819m above sea level.
Arrive in Phonsavan, then visit Plain of Jars site 1, then continue to sites 2 and 3. After this, we will travel around to search out remnants of military hardware from the second Indochina War - including Muong Khoune, the old capital of Xieng Khoang province that was heavily bombed by American Air Forces.
Highlight: Visit ethnic minorities villages, dirt road for great riding, beautiful mountain view. Plain of Jars and its history during the Second Indochina War.
Day 4: Phonsavan - Nam Neun. ~140 km, ~4 h.
In the morning we will visit Plain of Jars site 1, then continue to sites 2 and 3. After these, we will travel around to search out remnants of military hardware from the second Indochina War - including Muong Khoune, the old capital of Xieng Khoang province that Tham Piew cave - where, on 24 Nov 1968, a rocket from an American jet killed about 400 people.
Head out on the rocky dirt road to the 95-km ride from Muong Kham to Nam Neun.
Highlight: Tham Piew history cave and great fun riding on wild dirt road no. 6.
Day 5: Nam Neun - Xam Nua - Vieng Xay. ~120 km, ~3 h.
A great road to ride and we will have time to spend visiting some local hill-tribe villages along route no 6. After visiting Suan Hin Stone Garden, we will have a late lunch of traditional food in a local restaurant in Xam Nua.
After lunch, continue for another 30 km to Vieng Xay, the former Pathet Lao Revolutionary head-quarters with its famous hundred limestone cliffs, caves and Pathet Lao stories from the second Indochina War.
Highlight: Ethnic minority villages, Suan Hin Stone Garden, Vieng Xay and Pathet Lao Revolutionary histories.
Day 6: Xam Nua - Vieng Kham. ~260 km, ~7 h.
Return to road no. 6 to Phu Lao from there we ride 60 km of dirt road and have lunch in Vieng Thong village. We then ride through Phu Loei NBCA, an area of dense rainforest and visit Sam Soun village before arriving in Vieng Kham village on the bank of the Nam Xeng river.
Highlight: Great fun riding on a wild road, Phu Loei NBCA.
Day 7: Vieng Kham - Luang Prabang. ~180 km, ~5 h.
We continue on road no. 1 to Nong Khiew and then visit Nam Pak village before lunch in Pak Mong. Then turn left on to road no. 13 along the Nam river.
Visit Pak Ou village before we get to the Mekong River. We will visit Tham Ting and Tham Phoum caves, famous for their thousands of Buddha statues.
Highlight: Tham Ting and Tham Phoum caves, famous for their thousands of Buddha statues.
Day 8: Luang Prabang. Walking.
Visit World Heritage site Luang Prabang, with many wats and many cultural sites spanning 700 years of Lao history.
Highlight: Lao history and culture.
Day 9: Luang Prabang - Vientiane. ~420 km, ~8 h.
Our last day finishes with 8 hours riding on the highway back to Vientiane passing through Vang Vieng.
Highlight: End trip.
